The authorities of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) have punished 48 of its students to multiple extent for various reasons, including attacking the students during July uprising and cheating during examinations. Among the 48 students who have been punished, four have been expelled for life. The decision was taken during a meeting of the university's Student Disciplinary Committee presided over by Vice Chancellor of the university Dr SM Abdur Razzak today (26 February).

The expelled students include President of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) RUET unit Fahmid Latif Leon and General Secretary Soumik Saha. Confirming the matter, director of the university's Student Welfare Office and member secretary of the Committee for Student Discipline Dr Md Robiul Islam said, "Based on the demands of the students, the RUET authorities formed an investigation committee. After analysing the allegations, the committee found that the accused had disobeyed some sections of the university ordinance and broken the discipline of the university."

He added, "This is why four students have been expelled for life, and two others have been expelled for four semesters or two academic years. The remaining 42 students have been expelled from the residential halls based on the findings of the committee through a drive on 19 August 2024."

Meanwhile, the committee has found proof of the allegations against some RUET officials, including Assistant Engineer of the Engineering department Naim Rahman Nibir and Data Processor of Physics department Md Mohidul Islam, and requested the relevant forum to take actions against them, sources said.

The authorities also decided to form an investigation committee and take necessary steps based on its report in the future, according to sources present at the meeting. Meanwhile, RUET authorities have expelled two students for two academic years for cheating during examinations.
