Six members of a family were severely burnt in an explosion caused by a gas leak at a house in Chandpur early Sunday. The incident occurred on the 4th floor of a building owned by Rustam Bepari in the Koralia Road area of the district.

Four of the victims are in critical condition and have been transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) in Dhaka. The injured are Abdur Rahman Sardar, his wife Shanu Begum, their eldest son Imam Hossain, his wife Khadija Begum, their middle son's wife Niba, and their youngest son Mahin. While Mahin and Niba are receiving treatment at the Chandpur General Hospital, the other four have been admitted to NIBPS in Dhaka.

Abdur Rahman’s nephew, Mahmud, stated that the explosion occurred when the family lit the stove to prepare food for Sehri, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan. After the explosion, the victims were rescued and initially taken to Chandpur General Hospital. Two of them are being treated there, while the other four have been referred to Dhaka in critical condition.

Dr Mahmudul Hasan, the duty doctor at Chandpur Sadar Hospital, said that those sent to Dhaka had sustained burns covering 50-60% of their bodies, while the two being treated in Chandpur suffered burns on 20% of their bodies. As of now, none of the victims are considered out of danger.
