Despite an increased supply of litchi in Madaripur's markets, the prices remain high, resulting in lower buyer turnout.
Litchi prices range from Tk 250 to Tk 320 for 100 pieces, discouraging potential buyers. The market expects prices to remain elevated as litchi from different regions enters the market. In contrast, mangoes and jackfruits are reasonably priced and locally produced, offering affordable options for consumers.
The litchi available in the district markets is primarily sourced from Ishwardi and Jashore, with higher-priced Dinajpur litchis expected soon.
Local seller Md. Zahir notes that while sales are comparable to the previous year, this year's numbers are still lower overall. In contrast, mangoes and jackfruits are more affordable and abundant in the market, catering to the lower middle class.
“The price of litchi is slightly higher this year, similar to the previous season. Despite that, our sales are lower compared to last year, as buyers are purchasing fewer litchis. They often bargain and leave without making a purchase."
