If Sunamganj Science and Technology University, established as a public institution in 2020, aims to provide higher education opportunities for the students of Sunamganj, it is crucial to prioritize the development of Sunamganj Government College. As the most esteemed educational institution in the haor district, this college holds great expectations. While other colleges in the district are performing well, we believe that Sunamganj Government College should strive for even greater achievements.

As the oldest college in the Haor district, we understand the importance of adequately preparing our students for successful college studies. With proper guidance and opportunities, our students can effectively compete for admission into higher education institutions. However, if students from other regions continue to secure admission into the district's university while local students lag behind, the purpose of establishing a university in the district may be compromised.

Principal Professor Rajat Kanti Shome of Sunamganj Government College expressed these concerns. He joined the college as Vice-Principal on August 11, 2022, and has been serving as the principal since May 18, 2022, with distinction. Professor Shome is set to retire on September 10, 2023. During a recent discussion about various issues concerning Sunamganj College, Professor Shome provided some insights. He mentioned that the college offers ten subjects. The college should ideally have 52 teachers based on the allocated positions, but currently, there are only 28 teachers, indicating a severe staffing shortage. Furthermore, although the college had two hostels in the past, it currently lacks any.

Principal Rajat Kanti Shome emphasized the need to address the teacher shortage, suggesting that teaching can still be carried out with the existing faculty if desired. However, it is essential for higher authorities to consider providing separate accommodations for teachers and a residence for the principal. This would facilitate teachers in managing their teaching responsibilities effectively. Additionally, constructing an auditorium and a hostel within the college premises is necessary to resolve the accommodation crisis faced by the students.
