The Bangladesh Jubo Union's Sunamganj district branch organised a human chain in front of the Sunamganj Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday afternoon to demand the implementation of a court verdict regarding the preservation of the neglected five canals in Sunamganj town.

Former President of the Bangladesh Communist Party's Sunamganj District Branch, Professor (retd) Chittaranjan Talukdar, President Enam Ahmed, President of the Jubo Union District Branch, President Abu Taher Mia, and Youth Leader Shah Kamal spoke during this hour-long human chain. Other notable individuals who participated in the event were Sunamganj newspaper editor Pankaj Kanti Dey, District Udichi General Secretary Jahangir Alam, District Communist Party General Secretary Shahjalal Sumon, Jasad leader Bidyut Kumar Dey, and Municipal College lecturer Kanchan Vaidya, among others.

Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association filed a case in court to protect the five main canals of internal water drainage in Sunamganj town. Following the case, the court issued an order to rescue the canals, but the implementation has not yet taken place. The canals in question are Teghariakhal, Baraparakhal, Kamarkhal, Balaikhali, and Naluakhali canal.

These canals used to have a significant water flow and played a vital role in the city's drainage system. Despite the court order, the responsible authorities have not initiated the operation to rescue these five canals. Last week, "The Daily Messenger" published a report on this issue.
