Today marks seven years of Sholakia terrorist attack in Kishoreganj. On this day in 2016, militants ambushed a police post near the grounds of the Sholakia Eidgah just before the start of Eid prayers. Five people including two policemen, a housewife, and two militants were killed in this incident.
Local people are still haunted over the incident. The families of the dead and injured are still mourning as the trial process of the terrible terrorist attack is stalled due to legal complications.
The state party says that as the militants have been sentenced to death in other cases of the country, it is not possible to appear in court in person due to security reasons. That is why the deposition process of the witnesses cannot be started despite their presence on every date.
On July 7, 2016, militants started a gunfight with the police spreading panic all around. Near Eidgah, militants ambushed a police security post near Mufti Muhammad Ali Mosque and brutally killed two policemen. A militant named Abir Rahman was killed on the spot in a gunfight with the police.
Locals demand that the speedy trial process of such atrocious incident be completed and exemplary punishment be implemented. Jharna Bhowmik, a housewife, was shot dead inside her house during the incident. His relatives are still mourning. Gaurang Bhowmik, the husband of the deceased Jharna Bhowmik, said that it is a matter of regret the trial has not yet started.
“I want to see my wife's murder trial while I'm alive. Son Shubodev Bhowmik said, my mother died of bullet injury while sitting next to me.” Superintendent of Police of Kishoreganj Mohammad Russell Sheikh said that various initiatives have been taken to rehabilitate the families of those killed and injured in the terrorist attack. The case has been probed with utmost caution and the chargesheet has been issued.
