In a bustling spectacle that unfolds every Monday and Friday from six in the morning, the century-old betel leaf market, locally known as Raipur 'Panbazar', becomes a hub of activity. Located in Lakshmipur, this market attracts throngs of people eager to engage in the trade of this cherished leaf.

With an estimated worth of crores of money, the market acts as a hub for wholesalers who procure betel leaf from farmers across various upazilas in Laxmipur. These farmers come from regions like Haimchar, Faridganj, and Hajimara, which extend into the neighboring Chandpur district. Additionally, many farmers themselves make their way to the market to sell their bountiful betel leaf harvest.

From the Raipur market, the betel leaf embarks on a journey to Noakhali and other districts across the country. Commonly referred to as 'bira,' betel is traded in batch sizes ranging from 80 to 200 leaves, with wholesale prices ranging from Tk 40 to 130 per batch. Astoundingly, each market day sees a staggering sale of Tk 1 crore worth of betel leaf, attracting buyers from various corners of the nation.

Abul Kalam, a dedicated betel leaf grower, proudly shares his experience, "I cultivate betel leaf on 35 percent of the land in Haimchar upazila, which is conveniently located near my home. Buyers from different districts of the country come to purchase betel leaf directly from us."

Hasan, a wholesale buyer actively involved in the market, adds, "We procure betel leaf from the hardworking farmers and distribute them to different parts of the country. A single market day witnesses a sale worth Tk 1 crore of betel leaf."

Tahmina Khatun, Agriculture Officer of Raipur Upazila, highlights the favorable conditions for betel leaf cultivation in the area, stating, "Raipur Upazila provides a suitable environment for betel leaf farming, resulting in a significant production of this sought-after crop. The Raipur betel leaf market holds historical significance, serving as a pivotal trading center for this industry.

“Our farmers are reaping the rewards of betel cultivation, and we aim to further enhance betel production in our region." He added.

As the betel leaf market in Raipur continues to flourish, it remains a vital economic hub, connecting farmers, wholesalers, and buyers from all corners of the nation. The tradition and significance of this market pave the way for sustained growth and prosperity in the betel leaf industry.
