Two people were killed and 25 were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups over a land dispute in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj on Saturday (30 September) night. The deceased Ustar Miah, 37, son of Hasan Ali, and his rival Yusuf Ali, 35, son of Cherag Ali -- were residents of Kamargaon village under Mirpur union of the upazila.

Police and locals said there was a longstanding dispute between Ustar and Yusuf over ownership of a piece of land in the village. Both engaged in clashes several times over the matter earlier. Their respective groups, on Saturday, got into a clash with locally-made sharp weapons, leaving at least 27 people including the duo injured, they said.

The two men were rushed to Sadar Hospital where physicians declared Ustar and Yusuf dead upon arrival, confirmed Assistant Superintendent of district police (Bahubal-circle) Abul Khayer.

One of the injured was shifted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment, and the rest were at the Sadar Hospital, the police officer said. Sadar police station’s Officer-in-Charge Ajoy Chandra Dev said they detained four people when the rival groups again clashed at the hospital.

The bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that no cases have so far been lodged in this connection.
