In the heart of Ghior Upazila, nestled within Manikganj district, an enigmatic bridge stands as a testament to baffling extravagance. Constructed at an exorbitant cost of 55 lakh taka, this structure has remained devoid of any meaningful purpose for well over a decade. Instead, it has transformed into a somber site marred by frequent accidents.
This bridge, positioned stoically in front of the Pranisampad Office along the Dhaka-Manikganj-Ghior road, is an eyesore for those who traverse this route. It stands at an imposing height, estimated to reach around 40 feet from the road's surface.
Local resident Hasem Ali vividly recalls the construction of this bridge, which took place approximately 12 years ago. However, the community remains shrouded in uncertainty regarding its true purpose. Despite its outward appearance as a bridge, its underlying function remains a perplexing enigma for the residents. Since its construction, the bridge has languished, serving no practical utility.
Ajam Mia, another local resident, voices his concern, "This bridge is strategically placed at the intersection of three roads, yet its presence obstructs visibility, resulting in a troubling surge of accidents."
Tushar Ahmed, a college student, offers his perspective, describing the bridge as an anomaly. He notes, "It's a peculiar bridge, devoid of any infrastructure on either side, rendering it unused for pedestrian or vehicular crossing. However, during the rainy season, it becomes a makeshift shelter for those seeking refuge."
Atiqur Rahman, a schoolteacher, expresses his bewilderment, stating, "The purpose behind this bridge's construction remains a baffling mystery. It is evident that meticulous planning was absent, leading to the squandering of government funds on an ill-conceived project."
Gaous Ul Hassan Maruf, executive engineer of the Manikganj Roads and Highways Division, discloses that the construction of this bridge incurred an approximate cost of 55 lakh taka.
Adjacent to this perplexing bridge stands another Bailey bridge, prompting initial intentions to connect the two structures via a new road. Regrettably, the project was later shelved, leaving this bridge devoid of any discernible purpose.
