Contractor’s negligence and various mismanagements have been found in the renovation work of Kurigram’s Chilmari Upazila Health Complex. Although the duration of the project is 9 months, the contractor company could not finish the work even in one and half years. As a result, the patients and their relatives who came to the hospital for treatment have suffered severely.
It is known that, under the health engineering department, the building renovation work was ordered on August one last year in the 50-bed Chilmari Upazila Health Complex. A construction company named M/s Chamak Traders was entrusted with the renovation work. The cost of this work is 1,79,37,405 taka.
They were supposed to renovate the hospital’s old building and floor with three feet wall tiles, bathroom fittings, electric wiring, doors and windows (grill and thai fittings), construction of a two-storey garage, renovation of four quarter houses, construction of road and boundary wall inside the hospital. Although these works were supposed to be completed within nine months but due to the negligence of the contractor, the work was not completed even in 15 months.
It was seen that there is an uncovered drain in front of the building. There are also piles of garbage are in different rooms of the hospital. As a result, the patient and his relatives who came for treatment suffered a lot. Also, a source said the Thai glass and tiles in the windows are very low quality.
In this regard, Enamul Haque Sohail, the representative of the construction company M/s Chamak Traders, said that there was no mismanagements in the work. The work was done according to the schedule. The duration of the project is 9 months but it extended later. He also said that the work period is still one month left.
However, Chilmari Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Md. Aminul Islam said that the term of work has been extended is not true. Apart from this, the contractor did not pay heed to repeated complaints regarding low-quality materials and slowness of work. The matter was informed to the higher authorities.
