Physician stabbed by rivals inside his Cumilla city chamber dies

A doctor who was injured in an attack by his rivals in his chamber in Cumilla city’s Race Course area on Saturday succumbed to his injuries at United Hospital in Dhaka early Monday (23 October). Zahirul Haque succumbed to his injuries around 6:30 am while undergoing treatment at the hospital, said Dr. Azizur Rahman Siddiqui, director of Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

Earlier, pediatrician Zahirul Haque and his wife Farhana Afrin Himi were indiscriminately stabbed inside Dr Haque's chamber on Saturday afternoon.

Kazi Sharif, elder brother of Himi, said a group of people came and attacked the couple with sharp weapons over a dispute within the management committee of Shapla Tower in the Race Course area of the city. The doctor's chamber is located at Shapla Tower where he and his wife were stabbed in Saturday.

“Dr Zahir was seriously injured in the incident and he was treated in the ICU of Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Himi was also stabbed and she received treatment at the same hospital,” said Sharif.

Later, a case was filed accusing 5 people following a complaint lodged by Dr. Zahir's wife Farhana Himi. The accused are Salauddin Morshed Bhuiya alias Pappu, his wife Sumi, their sons Arham and Ahnaf and Silver Development Chairman Faruq Ahmed.

Police arrested one Salauddin Morshed Pappu in connection with the incident, said Ahmed Sonzur Morshed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station. Efforts are on to arrest the remaining accused as well, he added.

Meanwhile, BMA Cumilla president Dr Abdul Baki Anis, general secretary Dr Ataur Rahman Jasim, Swachip Cumilla general secretary Dr Morshed Alam, among others, demanded justice for the victims.
