The Chakaria and Pekua upazilas in the Cox’s Bazar district, particularly 25 unions in the area, are facing a power outage after cyclone Hamoon on Tuesday night.
The situation arose due to damaged power poles and connections during the onslaught of Cyclone Hamoon. Additionally, the destruction of Phaitong Bridge has severed the communication system along that route.
Around 82 power poles of Chakaria Palli Bidyut Samity were broken in the storm, leaving people in 25 unions of Chakaria and Pekua without electricity for three days. Although the power connection was restored at the Chakaria Municipal Headquarters, the rural electricity authority is yet to reconnect electricity to most areas.
Sadiqul Islam, DGM of Rural Electricity Chakaria, mentioned that 93 workers are actively engaged in restoring the damaged poles. In Pekua, 57 electric poles were broken, and mobile networks have been severely disrupted.
Dipan Chowdhury, AGM of Pekua sub-zonal office, informed that repair work is underway to restore the power system infrastructure in Pekua, and it may take another 2-3 days to fully reestablish the electrical connection.
Besides the power outage, the collapsed Phaitong Bridge has disrupted communication, cutting off access to Manikpur of Surajpur-Manikpur Union. This road closure has caused difficulties for about 10,000 people in the area. Cyclone Hamoon has caused extensive damage to several villages in Pekua Upazila, with around 2,000 houses destroyed, 5,000 trees uprooted, and an acute shortage of clean water reported. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
