The fire at Shekerchar-Baburhat in Narsingdi, the largest textile wholesale market in the country is under control now. According to the administration, the fire was brought under control around 2 am on Monday (30 October).
But the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Earlier on Sunday (October 29) at around 11 pm, a fire broke out at the fountain adjacent to the Index Plaza in Shekhercher-Baburhat. The fire service personnel arrived at the scene and started working on the fire.
According to the traders, the wholesale market has more than 5,500 shops. Nearly 100 shops were burnt down.
The president of the trade association, Gyasuddin, said that the fire was initially reported to have started from a lamp post in the market. There are often fires in this market. However, there are no water reservoirs in the market. The fire was initially brought under control as the fire service vehicles were unable to enter the market.
District Commissioner (DC) of Narsingdi Dr. Badiul Alam told the Daily Messenger that a five-member committee has been formed to investigate the fire. It has been asked to submit the investigation report within seven working days. He also assured the affected businesses of assistance by assessing the extent of the damage on Monday morning.
