The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Mahmudur Rahman, a former UP member of Ward No 6 in Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar district, on charges of illegally amassing assets worth Tk 5 crore 30 lakh 55 thousand beyond his declared income.

On November 7, Deputy Assistant Director Royel Hossain lodged the case at the ACC's integrated district office in Cox's Bazar.

According to the case statement, Mahmudur Rahman had submitted his wealth statement on May 20, 2019, disclosing immovable assets valued at Tk 2 crore 70 lakh 46 thousand.

However, during the verification process, the ACC discovered additional immovable assets amounting to Tk 6 crore 92 lakh 10 thousand registered in his name. It was revealed that he had deliberately concealed information about immovable assets worth Tk 4 crore 21 lakh 63 thousand. This concealment is deemed an offense under Section 27(2) of the ACC Act, 2004.

As per the case source, Mahmudur Rahman had declared information regarding movable assets worth Tk 26 lakh 48 thousand. Subsequent verification revealed a corresponding amount of immovable assets. The aggregate value of his wealth, combining movable and immovable assets, is assessed at 7 crore 18 lakh 59 thousand taka. Subtracting liabilities amounting to 1 crore 22 lakh 10 thousand taka, his net wealth stands at 5 crore 96 lakh 48 thousand taka.

Mahmudur Rahman's legitimate income was traced to be Tk 1 crore 19 lakh 60 thousand from the tax year 2010-2011 to 2019-2020. Concurrently, he declared expenditures amounting to 53 lakh 68 thousand taka. Analysing his total assets valued at 6 crore 50 lakh 16 thousand taka, which encompasses family and other expenses, it was revealed that, excluding the acceptable legitimate income of 1 crore 19 lakh 60 thousand taka, there were assets amounting to 5 crore 3 lakh 55 thousand taka outside the known income.
