The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said on Tuesday (28 May) that they summoned former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed for questioning over allegations of accumulating illegal wealth on June 6.

On Tuesday morning, ACC Commissioner Md Jahurul Haque came up with the announcement while talking to the media about the matter.

However, in the afternoon, a senior source of the anti-watchdog organization confirmed that Benazir’s family members will also be interrogated along with him.

According to the ACC sources, Benazir was called to appear on June 6 regarding the allegations of illegal wealth accumulation. He is scheduled to be questioned at the ACC headquarters from 10am.

Additionally, the commission has summoned his wife and children for questioning on June 9.

The ACC source said, though Benazir has shown substantial assets in his tax filings, the ACC will investigate the legality of the sources of these assets. Despite being listed in his tax file, the legitimacy of how these assets were acquired will be scrutinized.

On April 23, the ACC decided to investigate the allegations of illegal wealth against Benazir and his family.

Subsequently, the anti-watchdog organization requested various financial institutions, including the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), to provide transaction records concerning Benazir and his family members.

On May 23, a Dhaka court first ordered the confiscation of 345 bighas of land of Benazir and his family members, and 33 bank accounts in their names in various public and private banks.

Following this, last Sunday the court also ordered the seizure of several more immovable properties valued in crores and the freezing of additional movable assets in 119 documents.
