The police have not yet uncovered the real motive behind the murder of the police officer's parents in Jatrabari, Dhaka. The investigation has not made any significant progress regarding who might be involved in the incident. However, initial findings suggest that the motive was not robbery or theft, as nothing valuable was taken from the house despite the apparent chaos inside. The gold chain around the neck of Farida, one of the deceased, was also untouched.
Police officials speculate that the murders might be related to a land dispute. Relatives have mentioned an ongoing land dispute at the family's village home, and the police are considering this angle in their investigation. They are also looking into the possibility of an old dispute being the reason behind the murders.
In connection with the murder, a case was filed last Thursday night by Abdullah Al Mamun, the son of the deceased couple, at Jatrabari police station. Abdullah Al Mamun is a Sub Inspector (SI) of the Special Branch (SB) of Police. In his statement, he mentioned that between 1:00 pm last Wednesday and 6:00 am the next morning, criminals entered their house and hacked his parents to death. He suggested that the murder was premeditated and rooted in previous enmity.
Abdullah Al Mamun expressed his confusion about the motive behind the killing of his parents. He does not believe that the land dispute at the village house alone could be the reason for the murders. After the post-mortem at Dhaka Medical College, his parents' bodies were buried at the Matuail graveyard in the capital. The police initially suspect that the Shafiqur-Farida couple was killed due to a family dispute.
Moshiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (promoted to the rank of Joint Commissioner) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said, "We are proceeding with our investigation by keeping a few issues in front of us. We have several teams working to catch the killers.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metro South Division of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is investigating the case. PBI Dhaka Metro South Additional Superintendent of Police Sarwar Jahan said, "This is a planned murder." But for what reason, who committed the murder, it is not yet certain. There is no closed circuit (CC) TV camera near the house of the deceased couple. Because of this, the police have to suffer in identifying the murderer.
Iqbal Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Wari Division of Police, stated that the incident cannot be classified as a robbery or theft because the perpetrators did not take the gold chain from the woman's neck or her mobile phone. However, all the cupboards inside the house were found open. The police are investigating the case from multiple angles, including a potential land dispute at the family's village home, as mentioned by the relatives of the deceased.
Shafiqur's brother, Mofizur Rahman, informed the police that their family home is in Daganbhuiyan, Feni. He revealed that Shafiqur had an ongoing dispute over land with some people in the village, leading to the adversaries filing four cases against him.
Janata Bank's former driver, Shafiqur Rahman (60), and his wife, Farida Yasmin (50), were murdered in their four-story house in the Momenbagh Battala area of Jatrabari, Dhaka, on Thursday morning. The police reported that the couple had a son and a daughter. Their son, Mamun, is an SI with the Special Branch of the Police and lives on the first floor of the same building with his wife and parents. However, during Eid, Mamun visited his grandfather's house and his in-laws in Feni. Their daughter resides with her in-laws. Thus, Shafiqur and Farida were alone at home for a few days during the holiday.
Jatrabari Police Station OC Abul Hasan stated that Shafiqur Rahman had a routine of getting up early every morning to switch on the water motor in their house and then going to the mosque after performing the Fajr Sunnah prayers at home. According to OC Abul Hasan's assessment, it is suspected that when Shafiqur Rahman came out of the house to attend to the water motor, the perpetrators attacked and killed him. Subsequently, they went upstairs to the second floor and killed his wife, Farida Yasmin. The investigation is still ongoing to uncover more details.
It was mentioned that Shafiqur and his son, Mamun, along with their respective families, lived on the first floor of the building. Additionally, they rented out the upper two floors and one side of the ground floor of the building.
An official from Jatrabari police station disclosed that blood stains were discovered on the walls of an under-construction multi-storied building adjacent to Shafiqur's house. This finding led investigators to speculate that the perpetrators may have escaped through the roof of Shafiqur's building after committing the murder. It appears that whoever carried out this crime was familiar with Shafiqur's residence and his daily routines.
In addition to investigating the possible motive related to the land dispute, the police are also considering the movements of the perpetrators before and after the murder based on information provided by relatives and neighbors.
