A Chattogram court on Wednesday (10 July) issued arrest warrants against Chandanaish Upazila Chairman Jasim Uddin and his wife Tanzina Sultana for pay order fraud and failing to repay a loan of Tk 115 crore.

Chattogram’s Artha Rin Adalat Judge Mujahidur Rahman issued the arrest warrant, court’s Bench Assistant Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter.

The court also instructed the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Chittagong Range, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Chittagong District, and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandnaish Police Station to implement the order.

On April 30, an arrest warrant was issued against Jasim Uddin and his wife after they received a five-month detention in a case concerning Tk 89 crore loan default with Padma Bank.

Case records reveal that Jasim Uddin, head of Jessica Trade International, took a Tk 60 crore loan from Padma Bank’s Khatunganj branch in 2016, with an agreement to repay within a year, which he failed to do. The loan was rescheduled in 2022 with full interest waiver benefits. Despite this, the loan, including interest, grew to approximately Tk 89 crore.

As collateral, Jasim pledged a seven-storey market located on 16.59 decimals of land in the Laldighi area of Chattogram city.

On July 18, 2020, Padma Bank filed the case against Jasim in the court due to non-repayment. On January 29, the court ordered Jasim to repay the loan with interest. When he failed to comply, a travel ban was imposed on him.
