Police have arrested Sohag Mia, who threatened to kill Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, Member of Parliament for Habiganj-4.

Akhtar Hossain, Superintendent of Police of Habiganj, shared this information during a press briefing on Wednesday (10 June) afternoon.

Sohag Mia (32), son of Montaj Mia from Mobarakpur in Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar, was arrested by a joint team from Chunarughat Police Station, the Detective Branch (DB) of police, and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The arrest took place at a hotel in Sylhet on Tuesday night.

During the press briefing, Superintendent Hossain disclosed that an anonymous caller had informed Barrister Sumon via mobile phone that his life was in danger, providing relevant information. Following the threat, a general diary was filed on June 28 at Chunarughat Police Station, and Barrister Sumon himself filed another GD at DMP's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the night of June 29.

Sohag Mia told police that he had issued the threat with false information, intending to extort money through fraud. After Barrister Sumon became aware of the threat, he addressed it in a Facebook live video and filed a GD, sparking protests in his electoral area. Fearing repercussions, Sohag fled from Dhaka to Chattogram, then to Sylhet when he realized he was being tracked. He was eventually arrested in connection with a case.

Superintendent Hossain described Sohag Mia as a fraudster and online gambler, with fraud cases filed against him at Nabiganj Police Station and Rajnagar Police Station in Moulvibazar.

In response to the threat, district police assigned a bodyguard to Barrister Sumon two days ago.
