A court here today granted a three-day remand to Md Shariful Islam, former proctor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), in the Shaheed Abu Sayeed murder case.
Earlier, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Shariful Islam, an Associate Professor of the department of political science of BRUR, from Alamnagar area in the city as an accused in the murder case on Monday night
Later, Investigating Officer of the case and PBI Superintendent of Police (SP) ABM Jakir Hossain produced Shariful Islam to the Rangpur Metropolitan (Tajaht) Cognizance Court with a prayer for a five-day remand of the accused today.
"After the hearing, Judge Md Asaduzzaman granted Shariful's three-day police remand in the Abu Sayeed Murder Case late this afternoon," the
PBI SP told BSS this evening.
Shaheed Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the Department of English of Begum Rokeya University was shot dead by the police during the anti-discrimination student movement in Parker Mour area of Rangpur city on July 16 last.
Supreme sacrifice of Abu Sayeed instantaneously transformed the nation-wide anti-discrimination student-people movement into an unstoppable popular uprising that eventually ousted then-fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August.
On August 18, Ramzan Ali, Abu Sayeed's elder brother, filed a case in the court naming 17 people, including the former IGP, and 30 to 35 unknown names.
Later, Ramzan Ali filed a supplementary statement to the court to include the names of seven more people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former BRUR Proctor Shariful Islam, in the case.
They were also included as named accused in the case by the court order. The case is now being investigated by the PBI. "Earlier, dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Ali and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy were arrested in the Abu Sayeed murder case," the PBI SP said.
Earlier, IO of the case and PBI SP ABM Jakir Hossain also applied to the court to ban the foreign travel of the defendants for the sake of proper investigation. After the hearing, Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Rangpur Metropolitan Cognizance (Tajaht) Court passed the order on October 1 banning foreign travel of the accused persons in the Abu Sayed murder case.
The defendants who have been banned from travelling abroad are: former Rangpur Range DIG Abdul Baten, former Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Police Abu Maruf Hossain, Assistant Commissioners of Police Arifuzzaman and Imran Hossain, BRUR teachers Moshiur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Mondal, SI Bibhuti Bhushan, Tajhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rabiul Islam, BRUR Chhatra League President Pamel Barua and its General Secretary Shamim Mahfuz, Organizing Secretary Dhananjay Kumar Togar, Office Secretary Babul Hossain and Begum Rokeya University Officer Rafiur Hasan.
