The High Court is likely to deliver its verdict on the death reference and appeals in the Abrar Fahad murder case tomorrow (16 March). The death reference and appeals are included in tomorrow's cause list of the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain. According to the Supreme Court's website, the death reference is listed for judgment under the title "State vs Mehedi Hasan Russell and Others".
It is noted as "partially heard," along with the related appeals and jail appeals. After hearing arguments on the death reference, jail appeals, and appeals, the High Court kept the case waiting for a verdict on 24 February. However, it has now appeared in tomorrow's cause list for judgment.
Abrar, a second-year student of BUET, was beaten to death by a group of now-banned Chhatra League activists at the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on 7 October 2019. A Dhaka court on 8 December 2021 sentenced 20 Buet students to death and five more to life imprisonment for killing fellow student Abrar Fahad for his social media post criticising the Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of the Feni River.
