Former Minister Shajahan Khan broke down in tears while standing in the dock at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Monday, expressing that he had not seen his eldest son for five months. The emotional moment occurred during the hearing of a murder case against him. Following the hearing, the court granted a four-day remand.

During the proceedings, Shajahan Khan’s lawyer, Mizanur Rahman Badsha, emphasised that the former minister is an eight-time Member of Parliament and a two-time minister, hailing from a traditionally political family. Badsha also noted that Shajahan had previously been remanded twice, during which he became ill and was hospitalized. He argued that remanding Shahjahan, who is 76 years old, during Ramadan could cause further illness and distress, urging the court to reject the remand request.

As the remand hearing continued, Shajahan Khan requested permission to speak. Upon receiving approval, he tearfully stated, “I am not involved in this case. Why has this case been filed? Not only against me but also my eldest son, Asibur Rahman, has been made an accused.” He added, “I haven’t seen my son in five months.”

The judge replied that his lawyer had already made statements on his behalf, but Shajahan continued, raising his hands in a plea for attention. He further claimed, “This case has been filed against me as part of a conspiracy,” wiping his eyes with a tissue as he stood in the dock. After the hearing, the court granted a four-day remand.

Following the hearing, Shajahan Khan was escorted from the court wearing a helmet, bulletproof jacket, and handcuffs. As he was led to the lockup, he told reporters, “The police are saying I am not allowed to speak. This is a democratic country. I have spoken all my life, and I will keep speaking.” He then walked to the lockup, laughing.
