A Dhaka court has sentenced Zahidul Islam to death for the rape of a seven-year-old girl in Banasree, Dhaka. Judge Mosammat Rokshana Begum Hepi of Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 delivered the verdict on Wednesday. Zahidul Islam, son of Md. Fazlul Haque of Barisal district, was present in court when the sentence was pronounced. The court issued a warrant for his execution and ordered him to be sent back to jail.
Public Prosecutor Md Sajjad Hossain Sabuj stated, "There is no leniency for rapists. They deserve the harshest possible punishment to deter such heinous crimes. We are satisfied with the court's decision." Defense lawyer Imran Hossain expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, saying, "We will appeal to the higher court. We are confident that justice will be served, and Islam will be acquitted."
According to case details, the victim's family employed Zahidul Islam as a tutor. On March 23, 2021, at approximately 8:30 pm, the victim's parents, working in a nearby garage, observed Zahidul leaving their residence hastily. Upon hearing their daughter's cries, they discovered she had been assaulted. The victim's father subsequently filed a rape case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
