A deputy assistant engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) was promoted to the position of assistant engineer before he was implicated in a case related to amassing illegal wealth.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against PWD assistant engineer Mohammad Nawshadul Haque, with his wife, Saleha Akhter, being the main accused in the acquisition of illegal wealth.
The ACC issued a notice to file asset declaration on December 26, 2021, initiating an investigation into a 2019 complaint. Mohammad Nawshadul Haque submitted his declaration of assets on February 17, 2022. The case was filed against him on October 26, 2023. On October 16, he had been promoted to the position of assistant engineer and entered the ninth grade.
Allegations were raised that the ACC probe was delayed to allow him to be promoted.
When questioned about this, a senior source in the ACC told the Daily Messenger that there is no prohibition on promotion as per job rules. Nevertheless, it raises ethical concerns.
According to the ACC case statement, Saleha Akhter is the owner of Messars NS Enterprises. There were assets found in her name that exceeded her known sources of income by Tk 37 lakh 55 thousand. She failed to provide any evidence of the source of these funds.
The ACC alleges that Saleha Akhtar acquired these assets with the illegal money earned by her husband, PWD engineer Mohammad Nawshadul Haque, making her the primary accused.
Mohammad Nawshadul Haque is employed in E/M Circle-3 of PWD. His residence is located in Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj, and he resides in West Kafrul, Dhaka.
ACC Assistant Director Ranjit Kumar Karmkar filed the case at the District Integrated Office (Dhaka-1) on October 26.
