Public suffering due to road digging

Dhaka’s roads are plagued by various problems throughout the year. City dwellers sometimes get stuck in traffic jams for long periods of time. Thousands of work hours are wasted. Again, the city dwellers have to suffer due to the digging of roads. Digging is going on in various roads during the monsoon season. Somewhere the damaged road has been left behind after excavation. Such a situation exists on about 300 kilometers of roads in different areas of the two cities of Dhaka. Road users have to suffer endlessly. The condition of several roads in various wards of Old Dhaka has reached such a level that it has become difficult to move on those roads. Dhaka WASA water lines in those areas are very old; WASA is working on changing the water pipeline. Although it started quite early, the work on the roads is going on slowly.

Meanwhile, the roads of Turag, Uttarkhan and Dhakshinkhan of Dhaka North City have been abandoned for a long time after being dug. After joining the City Corporation from the Union Parishad, road renovation and development work is going on there under the project. From the main road in those three areas, everything has been dug up and left in a state of disrepair. Currently, the commuters of those areas are suffering indescribably. Dhaka WASA water pipeline has been dug in several nearby roads including Rayerbazar, Sher Shah Suri Road, Mohammadpur of Dhaka North City, but the roads have not been fully renovated. As a result, the people traveling on those roads are suffering a lot. Meanwhile, a part of the road from Kuril Chowrasta to Kalachandpur is being closed for the construction of Metrorail-1. Due to this, the area in front of Bashundhara Gate and Yamuna Future Park of Pragati Sarani is experiencing heavy traffic throughout the day.

Capital road digging and development work is not supposed to be done during monsoon season. Road policy discourages work at this time. However, the implementation of the projects of the City Corporation itself and various organizations is ongoing; Implementation of policy conditions is neglected. Various organizations continue to dig up and repair roads during the monsoon season for various reasons, but no one pays much attention to reducing the suffering of road users. Digging is done on the roads of the capital for the needs of various service providers. Lack of co-ordination among institutions leads to extreme public suffering, along with huge wastage of money. Care should be taken to ensure that public suffering does not increase due to road construction. The main aim of any development is to reduce public suffering. Therefore, it is best to undertake road digging or development programs by emphasizing this issue first.
