In an unexpected turn of events, the US president Joe Biden has taken the historic decision last Wednesday not to run for the second term in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. He was quite adamant about his playing the second innings and had even announced that no power could stop him from running for the second term.

In his official address he said, “I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future all merited a second term, but nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition. So, I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation. You know, there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life. There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices - yes, young voices. And that time and place is now.”

Interestingly, President Biden has strongly endorsed the candidature of his vice president Kamala Harris in the race. Though many Republican bigwigs suggested he resigns on grounds of physical and mental incapability; he firmly rejected those calls. He rather assured all that over the next six months, he would focus on doing his job as president.
“America is an idea, an idea stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant. It’s the most powerful idea in the history of the world,” Biden said eloquently.

Former President Barack Obama, under whom Biden served as vice-president for two terms, said about him: “Joe Biden has stayed true to these words again and again over a lifetime of service to the American people.”

As expected, former US President Donald Trump has let loose a torrent of abusive innuendoes against Kamala Harris claiming her to be a left-wing ‘extremist.’ He thinks she is a radical-left lunatic who will destroy his country if she ever gets the chance to get into the office.

By all accounts, the US presidential race 2024 will have many twists and turns as Election Day approaches.
