Deliberate destruction to cripple economy

The extensive damage done to the transport infrastructure by some anti-social political elements, taking the opportunity of student movement last week, only indicates that the mayhem was aimed at crippling the economy of the country. These vested interest groups have been trying their best to damage the country and the present government in a desperate bid to fulfill their own unholy agenda. It is therefore clear now the motive behind ransacking and torching the BRTC and BRTA offices and dozens of vehicles parked inside on the premises.

Not only in the capital city but also in many other district towns parked buses were torched by groups of hoodlums with total impunity. In the chaotic situation, country-wide train and truck services remained suspended because of the threat of looting and arson. As a result, essential commodities could not be carried to their destinations, which resulted in the spiraling of prices of these commodities.

It is becoming apparent now that the whole sinister operation was carried out according to a hurriedly drawn blueprint by the senior leaders and executed by party cadres to put the government on the wrong foot. Good news is many of these elements have already been identified by the law enforcing agencies and taken into custody.

Crippling the economy was the main agenda of the criminally motivated leaders of some political parties.

Why else would anyone go to burn down the BTV station, Shetu Bhaban, Metro Rail station, Elevated Expressway toll booths etc., in their right state of mind?

From the CCTV footage and confession of the arrested persons it has become clear now that the anti-quota protesting students were not present at the BTV Bhaban or Shetu Bhaban or Metro Rail stations. The cadres raided these places to destroy them and the criminals have left behind the tell-tale evidence of their heinous acts.

The damages in terms of money are still being estimated by the experts. One estimate says that it will take more than one year to repair the damages and put them back into operation.

These were public properties and the common people were enjoying the benefits. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the people to report to the authorities if they can identify any of the perpetrators.
