This is unfortunate yet true that in many countries some members of the police force willfully get involved in politics and dance to the tune of the ruling party. They do such illegal things for some pecuniary benefits or power or both at the same time. Whatever may be the reason, it is neither good for the force nor for the society they are supposed to serve. There are examples of such corrupt members causing great harm to others and to themselves in the long run.
A front-page story in The Daily Messenger on Thursday titled "Political involvement fuels corruption in police" paints a vivid picture of the situation in Bangladesh.
It shows that Bangladesh also has its fair share of incidences of corruption and politicization in the police force.
Our story says that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a good number of cases against many former and currently serving police personnel on charges of corruption and misuse of power. They have collected useful evidence to back their accusation which will be tried in the court of law.
Social researchers have shown that corruption and crime have increased in the Bangladesh police force because of political involvement of the accused. Emboldened by the support of some corrupt political elements, these personnel do not hesitate to cross the red line for their mutual benefit.
We have also seen how in recent years some senior officials of the police department got too bold and delved into amassing wealth having no regard for service rules and country's laws. Power had blinded them and they lost senses while manipulating their subordinates in helping them out in their corrupt acts. They remained unstoppable in their greed for property and cash money until they had to be stopped by force. Some of the stories of greed have left bad examples before the younger members in the force.
To be candid, the police department had never been totally clean of immoral persons. Since the British era corruption has been reported from time to time and corrupt personnel have been sent to jail. But at the same time, we have heard numerous stories of honest police personnel leaving examples of bravery and honesty to inspire others.
