A question that has been raised repeatedly among political parties since the interim government assumed power. And that is, when the election will be? Although the interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus has been saying since the beginning that elections will be organised at the right time after the reform of the state. In such a context, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government held a separate meeting with some political parties on election and reforms at the State Guest House Jamuna on Saturday.
Muhammad Yunus along with Asif Nazrul, the law adviser to the interim government, Adilur Rahman Khan, Industrial Advisor, Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain and chief adviser’s special assistant Mahfuz Alam were present on the occasion.
It is known that the leaders of most of the political parties, including the Jatiya Party, have demanded to hold the national elections within a 'reasonable' time by making the necessary reforms.
In terms of their opinions and proposals, the chief advisor. The incoming leaders said that Muhammad Yunus also emphasized on building unity among the political parties on every issue to solve the country's problems. Although the political parties expressed their views in the meeting, the leaders said that there was no discussion about the election deadline. It is true, there is no alternative to holding elections on the question of people's suffrage. However, if the power is handed over to political parties through quick elections without consolidating democracy, the question will remain how much it will bring welfare to the people.
However, the leaders also said in the meeting that we have failed to reorganize the country after the liberation war. Even after the popular uprising of the 90s, we failed to form the country; But I don't want to fail this time. Measures should be taken so that the people can enjoy the free air that is available today in exchange for the martyrs. Today or tomorrow national elections must be held. If elections are held as soon as possible, it is good for the interim government, good for the political party, good for the country.
We also think that elections before reforms are not advisable under any circumstances. So, the reforms must be completed first. Accountability and rule of law must be established within the country. So, pre-reform elections are not advisable under any circumstances. People and political parties need patience for a better future. However, so that people are not in the dark about the reform process, there is a need to disclose the outline to the public. Whether it is right to rewrite the constitution, or reform it, also deserves consideration. The Chief Adviser has clarified that the outline will be released based on the reform proposals of the political parties.
In this case, the political parties should also take into consideration the hopes and aspirations of the people and give welfare-oriented proposals. We need to clarify our stand against corruption, misappropriation and abuse of power. Learning from the mistakes of the past, the interim government should cooperate with everyone. It is expected that the interim government will be 100 percent successful in organizing a free, fair and impartial election through state reforms.
