The increase in incidents like murder and mugging in the capital is undoubtedly a matter of concern. According to a report published in media on Monday, crimes like theft, mugging and murder are being committed almost every day in different areas of the capital. Recent media's investigation says that at least 20 small and big robberies have taken place in the capital Dhaka in the last few days. In most of these cases, no complaints are made to the police station. Several students, NGO workers and others were injured by the robbers' knives. Besides, the murderous gang is becoming reckless. In addition to roads, incidents like murders are also happening inside houses.
On August 27 morning, a young man named Zarraf Ahmed Pritam was stabbed to death by robbers after stopping the rickshaw on the Darussalam Road in Mirpur. The two robbers pulled out knives and restrained him and forced him to take mobile phones, laptops and money from nearby. When he resisted, the two robbers stabbed him and he died on the spot. Three days later, early Saturday morning, Basabo was stabbed by a robber on the slope of the flyover. An autorickshaw driver named Yusuf was killed. On August 13, a media worker was robbed of his mobile phone in Shyamoli of the capital. On August 30, a young man named Iftekhar Hossain Emon was murdered in Hazaribagh of the capital. Apart from this, on the same day, the police recovered the body of a person named Mahfuzur Rahman Biplab from the Narai River in Bansree area. Last Saturday, the police recovered the dead body of a young man named Mahbub from Minabagh in Kadamtali. Earlier on August 27, miscreants entered the house in the Jatrabari area and hacked a pregnant woman named Seema Akter to death with a sharp weapon. Her seven-month-old child also died in that incident. These incidents are naturally creating a kind of apprehension and anxiety among the citizens of the capital, which is by no means desirable.
We know that the previous fascist government fell through the unprecedented coup of students on August 5. Then the police fell into public fury. Attacks, vandalism and arson occur in most of the police stations in the country. 44 policemen lost their lives, starting from looting of weapons. Many were injured. Numerous cars were burnt. For the safety of their lives, they left the police station and went to the shelter safely. The entire police system across the country collapsed. There was no police activity for about 10 days. In other words, after 10 days, all the police stations are operational. The law-and-order situation has deteriorated greatly. As a result, the broken system has not yet been fully implemented.
Criminal gangs have taken advantage of this opportunity. In such a situation, the police are trying to turn around, but it is not possible for them to control the law-and-order situation completely. Patrolling activities are also inadequate at the moment as police patrol cars are burnt. On the positive side, it is worth mentioning the sincere efforts of the concerned to normalize the situation. Various initiatives are being taken to develop the police as a professional force and restore people's trust in the police. Along with the normalization of police station activities, visible steps are also being observed in the recovery of looted weapons from the police station. The operation of joint forces to recover illegal weapons will start from tomorrow, Wednesday. All efforts will continue to restore the law-and-order situation quickly—that is what is wanted.
