This year, the devastating flood in different parts of the country is not stopping. One by one, the respective townships are being flooded, drowned and destitute. At the end of August, several districts in the south-eastern region were hit by the worst floods in the history of the country. After the recent floods in the Teesta region, the flood situation in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrakona has taken a dire shape.
According to various media reports, in the middle of this week, Sherpur district and the adjoining Indian state of Meghalaya received heavy rains. This caused the river water to rise rapidly overnight. Later the upstream water comes downstream and flash floods occur. From Sunday afternoon, the water in the upper reaches of Sherpur started to recede. The water in the furnace is still rising. In some areas of Netrakona district, water is still above the flood limit. The flood situation is stable in Sherpur and Mymensingh at present. Even in Jamalpur, the water coming down from the hill is above the limit.
New areas are drowning as the upstream continues to flow with the rain. Hundreds of thousands of people in three districts are trapped in water. The death toll is increasing. In the meantime, the death toll has risen to seven.
Recently, several terrible floods in the country, a topic has been discussed repeatedly. That is, heavy rainfall and abnormal flow of water upstream of the flood-prone areas in the country are normal causes of floods, but lack of timely warning about floods and lack of prior notification of releasing water upstream. Experts say the flood situation has become dire due to heavy rains and water being released upstream without warning. The amount of damage has increased a lot. A proper forecast would have reduced the amount of damage. They mentioned that climate change is responsible for abnormal rainfall and floods in addition to the urgency to make the language of weather forecast and flood warning simple to the common people.
We know that before the ongoing floods in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrakona, Sylhet three times this year; Three rounds in Feni, Comilla; One party in Noakhali and one party in Chittagong were affected by floods. At least 20 districts were flooded due to these floods. Recently, humanitarian disasters have occurred in the affected areas of several districts in the South-Eastern region. Many people are affected. More than half a million people are stuck in water. More than twenty people lost their lives. But there was a hopeful side, the unimaginable image of people standing by people in disaster. The people of the country are helping in the relief and fund formation for the victims, is also unprecedented.
There were also sad things. At that time, due to various reasons, all the cooperation could not reach many of the flood victims. Even in those areas there are complaints of lack of proper resettlement of people.
We think that in order to deal with the ongoing floods, it is necessary first of all to stand by the government as well as people of all classes and professions and various private organizations to stand by the flood victims. Extending a helping hand. As in the recent past, food, clean water, dry clothes, water purification tablets and other necessary items have been delivered to 100% of the flood victims.
Also, if the situation improves, there will be a need for rehabilitation—which requires a concerted effort. In addition, state initiatives to enhance regional cooperation on upstream water release and early warning are essential.
