Damage worth Tk 3 crore in CU vandalism

The investigation committee formed to assess the amount of damage said that the damage to the residence and transport office of the Chhatra League Vice-Chancellor of Chattogram University (CU) due to non-payment of subscription was about 3 crore 29 lakh 13 thousand taka.

According to university sources, the calculation of the amount of this damage came out in the 545th Syndicate meeting last Tuesday and Wednesday. At least 16 people were injured in the shuttle train accident (collision with a tree) in Chowdhuryhat area on the night of September 7.

Chhatra League capitalized on this incident and carried out massive riots at the Vice-Chancellor's residence, police box, teacher's club, and transport department. Meanwhile, at least 65 vehicles were vandalized in the transport department, the transport department said. In these incidents, the university authorities filed two cases in Hathajari police station. Besides, two separate investigation committees were also formed. Meanwhile, the members of the inquiry committee formed submitted the report on September 19.

Cases of Vandalism:

In the statement of the case, it is mentioned that the incident of vandalism and arson was caused in Chattogram University without receiving the contribution of 15 lakh taka from the vice-chancellor and transport department.It 'capitalized' on the shuttle train accident.In the case, allegations of vandalism, extortion, attempted murder and theft were made.14 people have been made accused in two cases.Among them,12 are BCL leaders and workers.

Formation of two investigation committees:

In the investigation committee related to the shuttle train accident, Communication and Journalism Department. Dr. Mohammad Sahidullah, convener, and professor of geography and environmental science department. Alak Palke member and chief security officer Abdar Razzak has been made member secretary.In addition, Convenor Dr. Bashir Ahmed professor of Islamic history and Sanskrit department in the investigation committee in the case of vandalism. Professor Anjan Kumar Chowdhury, Jamal Nazrul Islam Mathematics and Physical Science Research Center. Professor of Finance Department. Mohammad Jamal Uddin, Professor of genetic engineering and biotechnology department. Nazneen Nahar Islam has been made member and Assistant Proctor Sourav Saha Joy has been made member secretary. The inquiry committee has been asked to submit a report with recommendations at the earliest, but no specific time has been fixed.

Inquiry Committee to Assess Damages:

The authorities formed a six-member committee on September 10 to calculate the amount of damage caused by vandalism.Professor Sajib Kumar Ghosh of Marketing Department was made the convener and Deputy Controller of Accounts Masudur Rahman Chowdhury was made the member secretary.The remaining members of the committee are Professor Mohammad Aktar Hossain of Finance Department, Acting Controller of Accounts Amirul Islam, Acting Administrator of Transport Department Professor Ashraf Uddin, Molla Khaled Hossain of Engineering Department.The committee was asked to submit its report within three working days.

Amount of damages subject to inquiry before the Syndicate:

1 lakh 40 thousand 903 taka in case of vandalism of police post and main gate, 2 lakh 8 thousand 87 taka for vandalism of guest house, 5 lakh 5 thousand 741 taka for vandalism of teacher's club, 2 crore 82 lakh 95 thousand 474 taka for vandalism of transport department, 37lakh for vandalism of vice chancellor's residence Lakh 45 thousand 656 taka, damage of 17 thousand 680 taka has been shown due to vandalism in the security office.

Dr. Sajib Ghosh, convenor of the vandalism investigation committee, said, normally, as the convener of the damage assessment committee, my job is to provide a report to those who have appointed me by providing information and assisting completely and unanimously. We have provided VC through the registrar.

We have noted down everything that is the damage which part is damaged, separate one in case of transport, separate one in VC's bungalow, separate one in vandalism in teacher's club. I have isolated the one in the police box. Our job is to evaluate. Our task was to identify the extent of compensation and value it at market value.

Syndicate member Mohammad Khairul Islam said the report of the damage assessment committee was approved in the syndicate meeting. In the light of the report, the demand will be given to the University Grants Commission.

Meanwhile, even after two months have passed since the riots that took place in Chattogram University on September 7, the university authorities have not been able to arrest anyone.
