In a collaborative effort led by Nari Maitree, members of the Girls Guide from Lalmatia Government Women's College have taken a resolute stand for the reinforcement of current tobacco control regulations.
An orientation event was held on Wednesday (8 November), involving 30 dedicated members of the Girls Guide from Lalmatia Government Girls College. The focus of the orientation was on "The Adverse Consequences of Tobacco and the Significance of Enhancing Current Tobacco Control Regulations."
This impactful event received wholehearted support from Lalmatia Government Women's College in association with Nari Maitree.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, the Principal of Lalmatia Government Women's College, as the guest of honor. Also in attendance was Md. Abdus Salam Miah, serving as the Programs Manager for Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) in Bangladesh, in the role of a Special Negotiator.
Nasreen Ahmed, the Vice-Principal of Lalmatia Government Women's College, also attended the orientation program as a special guest.
Shaheen Akhtar Dolly, the Executive Director of Nari Maitree, chaired the event, adding her esteemed presence to the occasion.
During the event, Md. Abdus Salam Miah stressed the negative impact of tobacco on society and the critical need to enhance current tobacco control regulations. The proposed amendments to tobacco control laws primarily aim to protect non-smokers and the younger generation from the clutches of tobacco addiction. To prevent the younger generation from succumbing to smoking habits, the display of tobacco products in stores and retail sales should be halted.
With the alarming trend of both boys and girls falling prey to e-cigarette addiction, considering it a trendy lifestyle choice, it becomes imperative to impose a comprehensive ban on all emerging tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.
Currently, 442 lives are lost daily due to tobacco use. Strengthening existing tobacco control laws holds the potential to reduce these tragic outcomes. The collective demand is clear: strengthen current tobacco control laws to safeguard the well-being of future generations.
Humaira Sultana said that for a good life, strengthening of tobacco control laws is necessary. Tobacco companies are running various tempting and unethical advertising campaigns which are leading the youth towards danger. So, I appeal to everyone, let us all unite together to strengthen tobacco control laws
Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Principal of Lalmatia Women's College, commended the efforts of Nari Maitree and emphasized the detrimental effects of tobacco, urging its swift disposal. Collaboration, awareness, and, most importantly, enhancing tobacco control laws are essential to achieving this goal. Dr. Rafiqul Islam pledged full support for all Nari Maitree's initiatives and strongly advocated for the immediate abandonment of tobacco.
This event marks a significant step toward a healthier and tobacco-free future. The Girls Guide from Lalmatia Government Girls College, in collaboration with Nari Maitree, CTFK, and other esteemed institutions, is unwavering in its commitment to raising awareness about the devastating consequences of tobacco and advocating for the reinforcement of tobacco control regulations.
