Jagannath University (JnU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Imdadul Haque passed away. (Innalillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He breathed his last on Saturday (11 November) at approximately 5:15 am while undergoing treatment at the BRB Hospital in Panthpath of the capital. The matter was confirmed by the proctor of the university Mustafa Kamal.
The body of Vice-Chancellor Imdadul Haque is being brought from the hospital to Jagannath University campus for janaza. His Janaza is scheduled to take place at Jagannath University at 11 am. Later another Janaza will also be held at Dhaka University. All Jagannath University teachers, officials, employees, students and members of the Journalists' Association have expressed grief over the death of the Vice-Chancellor.
Before this, Professor Imdadul Haque was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of last September. Later on September 12, he went to Singapore to receive advanced cancer treatment. There he underwent radiotherapy. Later, he returned to the country on October 12 as his physical condition improved.
Incidentally, Professor Imdadul Haque is a Bangladeshi botanist. He was the Professor of Botany Department of Dhaka University and the fifth Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath University. He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University on 1 June 2021 for a four-year term.
Professor Imdadul Haque was born in Pabna district. He obtained MSc in 1978 and PhD in 1988 from the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka. He has completed several post-doctoral studies in universities in Germany and the United States.
Apart from teaching, he has served in various important positions including Dean of Faculty of Biology of DU, Vice President and Member of Dhaka University Teachers Association, Treasurer and General Secretary of Bangladesh Botany Association, General Secretary of Bangladesh Association for Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology.
