Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahfuzul Islam, the Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University (BDiU), states that his institution is introducing new subjects not taught elsewhere. Furthermore, the university is providing special facilities for students, allowing them to work for six months or a year during their studies. He highlights that this opportunity is unique to Bangladesh. In a recent interview with The Daily Messenger's Staff Reporter Anjan Chandra Deb, Dr. Mahfuzul Islam said that the university is geared towards producing skilled professionals for the fourth industrial revolution and aims to provide leadership in the fifth industrial revolution
Question : Can you please tell us about the goals and approach behind the establishment of this specialised university?
Answer : The University was founded in 2016 with the objective of adapting to changes dynamically. It is one of four specialized universities in the country, alongside the Maritime University, Aeronautical University, and Medical University. While other universities focus on technology, BDiU exclusively emphasizes subjects that will be relevant in the future.
Notably, traditional subjects are not offered here. The world is rapidly transforming, and in this university, we focus on subjects that align with the future. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, announced by the World Economic Forum in 2011, saw the integration of computers and the internet. Now, we are entering a new era where machines will work independently without human instructions. The technologies required for this fifth industrial revolution will be part of our curriculum.
I initiated Digital Bangladesh in 2009 under the leadership of the honorable Prime Minister. In 2011, she declared it as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Now, discussions are ongoing globally about the Fifth Industrial Revolution, a term coined by our Prime Minister with the slogan 'Smart Bangladesh.' The Fifth Industrial Revolution and Smart Bangladesh essentially refer to the same thing. We are not imitating others; rather, we are striving to lead with our own innovations.
To keep up with the ever-evolving technologies, we need a skilled workforce. Creating that workforce is one of the key responsibilities of a Digital University. The education system in our country needs to adapt to the changes brought about by technology, and this university plays a role in shaping the future of education.
Question : What subjects are currently being taught, and will any new subjects be added in the future?
Answer : Although my tenure at this university has been relatively short, it has already incorporated various cutting-edge technologies. I have introduced two unique subjects here that are not found anywhere else in the world. One is ICT in Education, and the other is Bachelor of Science in Internet of Things (IoT). Additionally, there is a growing demand for cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering. Despite many universities offering software engineering, there is still significant demand for this subject.
Question : With the integration of technology and innovation, what role will the university play in shaping modern knowledge and technology development?
Answer : Since my joining, time has been limited, and I haven't contemplated beyond the present 41 years. However, the distinctive feature of my university is its commitment to change. No traditional subjects are taught here, and conventional technologies are not used in classrooms. We are moving away from that direction. Thus, embracing change is integral to progressing along the path. As I venture into new paths, exploring different methodologies, thinking ahead, innovating, and striving to position my journey optimally while being an example for others are crucial.
This university is at the forefront of change, and nothing here is conventional. If someone were to tell me that, even after 41 years, this university will provide the best service, I believe it. The university will not be conventional; it will lead with new and innovative ideas. As I have been serving as vice-chancellor for the last four years, I will strive to ensure that future leaders also advance in a similar manner.
Question : How important is the practical application of vocational knowledge for students? Will age be a barrier in the admission process?
Answer : There are two questions here, one regarding the accommodation of industry knowledge within the academic setting and the other about age limitations in the admission process. For the first question, we are working on creating new bylaws for universities. Students should have the opportunity to work in the industry amid their studies. Thus, after completing the third or second year, a student, if willing, can take a break for six months or a year to work and then resume studies at the university. This option is the first of its kind in Bangladesh.
As universities are expanding, each university will have its own dimension. You may notice that every university has its own set of laws. The government gives universities the autonomy to create their own laws. Why is this done? So that universities can have their own laws to foster creativity and lead the next generation forward, embracing change. Therefore, I believe that with time, along with the change, we will be able to admit people of all ages based on their capabilities. This cultural change will happen in the future.
Question : What is your plan for creating skilled human resources in the country?
Answer : Our goal is to produce graduates from our education system who can meet the requirements of our country without the need to bring in experts from India, Sri Lanka, or other countries. This approach aims to minimize dependency on foreign currency. To achieve this, we have recently introduced tutorial-based applied education classes at the Digital University. There will be theoretical classes alongside applied classes and analyses.
For instance, a student who has completed an MA, struggles to write a letter or a note. This indicates a flaw in our education system. To address this, we are implementing a proper education program at the Digital University.
This university is guided by two words: Bangabandhu and Digital. The term "Digital" is associated with change, envisioning the dreams of the future world. Bangabandhu, the Father of the Nation, was a successful individual who spent his life for the Bengali nation. His sacrifice and foresight are essential aspects driving the Bangabandhu Digital University towards success and a promising future.
