Directorate of Roads and Public Ways has installed 50 dividers on the road in front of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).  The installation of these dividers was started at 4:30 pm on Sunday (12 May).

Talking to Mohammad Yunus, Assistant Engineer of the Department of Roads and Public Ways working in this work, it is known that these dividers are being installed for initial observation. He said that more dividers will be installed later if the benefits are observed.

He also said that we have already taken steps to widen this road.  This work will be started soon.  In this case, some parts of the road will be widened by ten feet and some parts by more than fifty feet.  We hope to start these works within the next few months.

Earlier, on April 22, the general students of Cuet started a movement based on the death of two students of Cuet after being hit by a bus on the Chittagong-Kaptai road. At that time, they blocked the road and raised several demands to the concerned authorities including widening of the road, installation of dividers, appointment of traffic police.

After talking to the university administration, the students decided to lift the blockade and return to classes on the condition of monitoring the progress of meeting the demands.

Mahmudul Hasan Zahid, a 4th year student of civil engineering department, said, "We see the installation of these dividers as an achievement of our movement. We are regularly monitoring all our claims and action taken against them.  Soon we will meet the authorities with necessary documents to widen the road.  Besides that, we will take all necessary steps to make the movement successful.

In this regard, the deputy director of Cuet's student welfare office, Professor Dr. Mohammad Islam Mia told  that, "In view of the demands of the students, the Roads and Public Ways Department, in consultation with the university administration, initially installed 50 dividers in front of the university.  Apart from that, we are discussing with the concerned authorities about the widening of the said road.  Although it is a long process, we are trying to start these works as soon as possible"
