Even GPA-5 is not enough!

Even after scoring GPA-5 in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations, students will face a big hurdle while getting admission to college. Those having higher marks than others will be able to get admission to their preferred educational institutions. A total of 1 lakh 82 thousand 129 students got GPA-5 this year. Girls are ahead of boys this year too.

According to education board data, the total number of students securing GPA-5 this year is more than the number of seats in reputed and quality educational institutes. As a result, thousands of students will not be able to get admission to the educational institutions of their choice.

Officials concerned say that although there is an opportunity to apply for admission to 11,500 educational institutions, the fight will be mainly in 230-250 institutions. These include about 200 colleges and madrasas, 47 government polytechnic institutes, one graphics art institute, and one glass and ceramics institute. About 20 such colleges are located in Dhaka and there are about 20,000-21,000 seats available there. But some of them have school branches. As a result, the students of the school branch of that institution will get priority in admission.

As per the policy, online applications can be made in order of preference for admission to minimum five and maximum 10 colleges or equivalent institutions. Out of the number of colleges a student applies to, his placement in only one college will be decided on the basis of merit, quota (where applicable) and preference. In case of equal GPA among the applicants, those with higher marks will be preferred. However, the three church-run colleges – Holy Cross, St Joseph, and Notre Dame – will be able to select their students through their own admission tests.

Educationists say that getting GPA-5 is not the main success of a student. Thousands of GPA-5 students appearing in the university entrance exam cannot even get the pass marks. In the last few years, 80 per cent of students failed in admission tests despite having good results.

This year, the number of female students who got GPA 5 is 98 thousand 776. The number of male students who got GPA 5 is 83 thousand 353. The average pass rate is 83.04 per cent.

The pass rate of male students is 81.57 per cent. The pass rate of female students is 84.47 per cent. 298 students passed from foreign centers. None of the candidates from 51 educational institutions could pass. And in 2,968 educational institutions, the pass rate is 100 per cent. The highest pass rate is in Jashore while the lowest is in Sylhet.

According to the published results, 1 lakh 83 thousand 578 candidates got GPA-5 last year. This year, the highest pass rate is in Jashore Board, 92.32 per cent. And the lowest pass rate is in Sylhet board, 73.35 percent. Besides, the pass rate in Dhaka Board is 89.32 percent, Rajshahi 89.25 percent, Cumilla 79.23 percent, Chattogram 82.80 percent, Barishal 89.13 percent, Dinajpur 78.40 percent, and Mymensingh 84.97 percent. Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban on Sunday morning.

The SSC and equivalent examinations started simultaneously across the country on February 15 this year and ended on March 12. This year, 20 lakh 24 thousand 192 candidates appeared for the examination under 11 education boards. Students of 29 thousand 735 educational institutions participated in this examination in 3 thousand 700 centers across the country.

Among them, 16 lakh 6 thousand 879 were candidates under 9 general education boards. A total of 2 lakh 42 thousand 314 candidates sat for the exam under the madrasa board. 1 lakh 26 thousand 373 people took the SSC (Vocational) and Dakhil (Vocational) examination under the technical education board.
