The decision to issue a notice regarding the government's ‘Prottoy’ pension scheme as mandatory has sparked controversy at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). The BAU Teachers' Association (BAUTA) condemned it as discriminatory and has initiated a silent procession while holding a Black badge in the body. In response, they have announced a half-day work stoppage over the next two days. Should their demands not be met, they have warned of escalating protests.
On Tuesday (May 14), at 12:30 PM, various departments' faculty members participated in a silent protest and sit-in at the university's central library annex.
Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, President of the BAUTA and Professor of the department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics, along with professor Dr. Tanvir Rahman, Professor of the department of Aquaculture, led the presence of faculty members. Also present were Professor Dr. Md. Saidur Rahman, Treasurer of BAU and vice-president of BAUTA, professor Dr. Shubash Chandra Das, President of the Democratic Teachers' Forum, professor A.S.M Golam Hafeez, President of the Sonali Dal, along with over two hundred faculty members, university officials, and staff members.
Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, announced the work stoppage, stating that faculty members would remain on half-day work stoppage for the next two days. During this time, all classes and exams, except for the semester finals, will be suspended. Additionally, from 11 am to 1 pm, faculty members will maintain a presence in front of the university library to ensure the continuity of the protest.
