In an effort to highlight the importance of milk and dairy products in human life and to promote the dairy industry, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) is set to celebrate World Milk Day on the first of June for the tenth time.
As part of the celebration, approximately 1,600 students from various schools within the university campus will be given milk. Additionally, the Dairy Science Department of BAU will organize a rally and awareness seminars.
During a press conference held on Thursday (May 30) at 12:30 PM in the meeting room of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, these details were presented by Dr. Mohammad Shohel Rana Siddiki, Secretary of the World Milk Day 2024 Celebration Committee and Professor of the BAU Dairy Science Department.
The press conference was presided over by Dr. Md. Harun-Ur-Rashid, Advisor of BAU Student Affairs’ division and Professor of the Dairy Science Department.
Other attendees included Associate Professor Dr. A.K.M. Masum, Head of the Dairy Science Department, Professor Dr. Raihan Habib, Assistant Professor Md. Sadakatul Bari, professor Dr. Bapon Dey, Head of the Poultry Science Department and professor Dr. Musabbir Ahammed.
Speakers at the event emphasized that milk is nature's best food. Due to its balanced composition of essential nutrients, milk is considered a complete food. The lactose in milk supports the growth of human brain and nerve cells.
They also highlighted the critical role of milk in the development of a child's brain. The more a nation consumes milk, the more intelligent it becomes. In the fiscal year 2022-23, Bangladesh produced 14.07 million metric tons of milk, translating to an average daily availability of 221.89 ml per person.
However, an adult needs 250 ml of milk daily. To bridge this gap, approximately 40 billion BDT worth of powdered milk is imported annually.
