Dr Sanjoy Kumar Sarker, an associate professor of the Finance and Banking department of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has been accused of torturing and attempting to murder his wife.
The wife, Jaya Saha, made the allegations during a press conference, held at the university’s press corner on Tuesday at 11:00 am. Jaya also filed a written complaint with the university administration seeking justice.
Jaya Saha, at the conference, alleged that she was physically abused by her husband Dr Sanjoy Kumar since their marriage in 2015. The abuse continued even after Joya was admitted to the Law Department of IU during the 2016-2017 academic session. She further claimed that Dr Sarkar restricted her from attending the classes on campus to hide his inappropriate behaviour with female students.
The abuse reportedly escalated after the couple’s child was born. According to Jaya, Sarkar once attempted to strangle her with a stick, but at that time a housekeeper came and saved her. Besides, A year ago, Sarkar allegedly abandoned Jaya and their child at her parents’ home in Natore and did not attempt to contact them. Jaya claims he only wants them to return if she pays him 10 lakh taka.
The accused, Dr Sanjoy Kumar, dismissed the allegations as a family matter and refused to comment further but claimed his door is always open for his wife and children.
Regarding the issues, IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Shaikh Abdus Salam expressed his limitations in intervening in family matters. He stated that the university would take action against the accused only if a court found him guilty.
