Under the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience," Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) celebrated World Environment Day 2024. To mark the day, the Department of Environmental Science and the Department of Agrometeorology organized a colorful rally, tree planting programs, and a seminar.

Tuesday (June 5) At 11 AM on, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Awal inaugurated the event with a rally. The rally began at the university's administrative building, circled the road in front of the library, and concluded back at the administrative building, where tree planting took place. Following the rally, a seminar was held in the conference room of the Faculty of Agriculture.

The keynote speaker at the discussion session was delivered by Dr. Ranjan Das, a professor at Assam Agricultural University, India. During his keynote, he emphasized that climate change is like cancer and needs urgent treatment. He stated that the environment itself is not responsible for its adversities; rather, humans are to blame.

Every year, sudden floods and river erosion caused by climate change result in significant damage to agricultural land, with 35.6% of people suffering from malnutrition. Lands that are used for single-crop farming are most vulnerable to these damages.

The discussion session was chaired by Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Baten, head of the Department of Environmental Science, and conducted by Shah Tasdika Auyon, a lecturer from the same department.

The event was graced by the presence of Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Awal as the chief guest, with the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Dr. G. M. Mujibur Rahman, and the head of the Agrometeorology Department, Professor Dr. A.K.M. Golam Sarwar, as special guests. Additionally, faculties of various departments, and approximately fifty students from the respective departments attended the event.

In his address, Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Awal remarked that continuous exploitation of the innocent environment eventually leads to its hostile transformation. He pointed out that this adverse transformation of nature is now evident.

This year, temperatures in Bangladesh and India have broken all previous records, and the country is rapidly leaning towards desertification. Furthermore, indiscriminate hill cutting in Chattogram has led to sudden landslides. Therefore, he emphasized the need for environmental awareness and restoration efforts to return nature to its former state.
