Protests at BAU Disrupt Train Services Over Quota Abolition

The Disruption of Train Services as part of ongoing protests at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) against the quota system in the first and second class government jobs have entered their second day.

Following a pre-announced program, students gathered at the university’s Mukta Mancha at 12 PM on Thursday (July 4th.

The protests intensified after news broke that The decision to abolish the freedom fighter quota system in the first and second class government jobs has been declared illegal by the High Court, and the Appellate Division has temporarily upheld this verdict.

After yesterday once again, students obstructed the railway line at Abdul Jabbar Mor within the university premises, disrupting train services. The blockade lasted for about two hours before train operations resumed. At that time, the railway connection between Mymensingh region and Dhaka was disrupted.

At around noon, the students began their protest march from Mukta Mancha, proceeding towards the KR Market. The march then moved towards Abdul Jabbar Mor.

At that time, the Jamalpur-bound Jamalpur Express train from Dhaka was approaching the railway line near Abdul Jabbar Mor. The students blocked the moving train, causing a halt in train services from 1:10 PM to 3:10 PM.

Protesting student Pranab Ghosh stated, "Postponing the hearing is equivalent to deceiving the students. We do not want to remain in any uncertainty. The protest for the abolition of the quota system will continue until it is abolished."

Hasib, a first-year student of the Veterinary Faculty and the grandson of a freedom fighter, said, "My grandfather was a freedom fighter. Despite being from a freedom fighter family, I want the freedom fighter quota to be abolished.

As a grandson of a national hero, I do not want to see merit being compromised. I have faced various taunts because of this quota. It’s an outright disrespect to the freedom fighters."
