Astro-Olympiad Mymensingh Region Selection Held at BAU

The Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) hosted the selection test for the International Astronomy Olympiad. The selection process for the Mymensingh region of the Apex Astro-Olympiad took place on the third day of selecting Bangladesh’s representatives.

A total of 96 students aged 14 to 18 from various schools and colleges, who are interested in astronomy, participated in the selection test.

The selection test started at 9 AM on Sunday (July 7) at the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium of the university. Among the participants, 60 were chosen as winners, with 20 in the senior group and 40 in the junior group categories.

Medals and certificates were awarded to the winners at 2:30 PM. The Bangladesh Astronomical Association organized the Olympiad, with the BAU Biggan Chorcha Kendro providing overall assistance in hosting the event at BAU.

Present at the Olympiad were the Chairman of the Bangladesh Astronomical Association, Mosharul Amin, Professor Kazi Shek Farid from the Department of Rural Sociology, central organizer of the Biggan Chorcha Kendro Tanzila Ritu, and President of the BAU Biggan Chorcha Kendro Center Jaber Islam.

Subsequently, the primary selection round winners will participate in the national round of the Apex Astro-Olympiad, to be held in Dhaka on August 3. From the national round, 15 students from the senior group and 15 from the junior group, totaling 30, will be selected for a four-day residential camp and final selection from August 21-24.

Mosharul Amin, Chairman of the Bangladesh Astronomical Association, stated that the top five contestants from the final 30 will represent Bangladesh in the 28th International Astronomy Olympiad. Additionally, from the senior group's third to twelfth place winners, two will be selected through interviews to receive scholarships from the Russian government. These selected students will have the opportunity to study astronomy and astrophysics in Russia.
