Dhaka University`s 29th Vice-Chancellor professor Dr. A.S.M. Maksud Kamal has resigned from his post. On Saturday (August 10), he submitted his resignation letter to the Ministry of Education.
DU pro VC education Dr. Sitesh Chandra Bachar has stated that he resigned considering the overall situation.
Earlier, on November 4 of last year, Professor A.S.M. Maksud Kamal was appointed as the 29th Vice-Chancellor in place of former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman. After taking office, he initiated various efforts to advance the university and implemented some of those initiatives.
When the government job quota reform movement began, common students of Dhaka University joined it. To suppress this movement, the student wing of the Awami League, at the direction of central leaders, attacked the students of Dhaka University at that time. However, Maksud Kamal did not say anything about this.
Subsequently, on July 17, Vice-Chancellor Dr. A.S.M. Maksud Kamal stated, "The campus is not under my control. I cannot say anything." On that day, police attacked the students of Dhaka University. On that day, three students were injured due to police sound grenades and tear gas.
Due to his failure to stand by the common students in the quota reform movement, students expressed their anger towards him from the beginning. After the movement ended, students of Dhaka University demanded his resignation. Yesterday, a group of students held a protest rally demanding the Vice-Chancellor's resignation.
Additionally, they demanded the resignation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Education), the Proctor, Assistant Proctors, the Treasurer, all Provosts, and all Senate and Syndicate members.
Also The provosts of Rokeya Hall, Shamsun Nahar Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Freedom Fighter Ziaur Rahman Hall, Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, and Salimullah Muslim Hall have resigned
