The 64th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), the cradle of agricultural education and research in Bangladesh, was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Established on August 18, 1961, the institution is situated on 1,200 acres of picturesque land in Mymensingh and has significantly contributed to the nation’s agricultural education, research, and extension activities.
The day’s events commenced at 11:00 AM on Sunday, August 18, with a joyful rally organized by the BAU Teachers' Association. The rally, inaugurated by Professor Dr. Khandaker Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Convener of the BAU Dean Council, began in front of the library building. It passed through the Vice-Chancellor's residence, continued in front of the Botanical Garden, and concluded at the helipad. During the rally, prayers were offered, and the national flag and university flag were hoisted. Professor Dr. Khandaker Md. Mostafizur Rahman and Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, President of the Teachers' Association, addressed the gathering. Trees were planted between the helipad and the Moron Sagor monument, followed by the release of fish fry into the Brahmaputra River by faculty members and students.
The rally was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, President of the BAU Teachers' Association, and conducted by Professor Dr. Md. Asaduzzaman Sarkar, General Secretary of the Association. Attendees included Professor Dr. Khandaker Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Convener of the Dean Council; Professor Dr. M. Harun-or-Rashid, President of the Sonali Dal; Professor Dr. Ahmad Khairul Hasan, General Secretary of the Sonali Dal; Professor Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry; Professor Dr. Bentul Mawa, Director of GTI; as well as faculty members, officers, staff, and students from various faculties.
Professor Dr. Khandaker Md. Mostafizur Rahman emphasized the need for a world-class university free from political influence. He stated, “We want a university that ranks among the top in the world. To achieve this, we must ensure our campus is free from politics. Our students are our strength. They will study in their respective fields, conduct quality research, publish good articles, and contribute to making our country self-sufficient in agriculture. Our students have the capability to study at top universities worldwide, but they are being deprived of this opportunity due to the current dirty politics. I believe our students will be free from such politics in the future.”
Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sardar, President of the BAU Teachers' Association, highlighted the university's significant contributions to agricultural development since its inception. “Our graduates have played a crucial role in making our country self-sufficient in food production. However, we are struggling to maintain this achievement. Our university has achieved a lot, and with it comes greater responsibility. We want to keep our campus free from dirty politics. Here, students will study, and we will teach that should be our only politics. BAU will become a model university where everyone will study in a beautiful environment and contribute to both the nation and the world,” he said.
Following the rally, prayers were offered in all mosques and places of worship on campus at 1:30 PM, seeking blessings for the university's development and prosperity.
