Technician murder case: 13 JnU BCL leaders among 34 accused

A case has been filed against 34 individuals in connection with the murder of a trainee technician, Elem Al Faydi, who was shot during the anti-discrimination protest in Lakshmibazar, Old Dhaka.

Among those named in the case are Jagannath University (JnU) BCL President Ibrahim Forazi and General Secretary SM Akter Hussain, along with 13 other members of JnU BCL. This marks the second case involving the JnU BCL.

On Wednesday (August 21), Samsul Arefin, a student from the Bangla Department at Jagannath University, filed the case before Metropolitan Magistrate Tariqul Islam. The court accepted Arefin’s testimony and directed Sutrapur Police Station to register it as a formal complaint.

The other accused JnU BCL members are: Vice-President Ibrahim Sanim, General Secretary of the Bangla Department Chhatra League Arjun Biswas, 13th batch Mathematics Department student Mahimur Rahman Bijoy, Statistics Department’s 11th batch student Minun Mahfuz, Physics Department’s 11th batch Shahrukh Alam Shovon, General Secretary of Islamic Studies Department Chhatra League Sajbul Hasan, Economics Department Chhatra League leader Mir Mukit, Anthropology Department student Miraj Hossain Raj, 13th batch Mathematics Department student Zahidul Islam Hasan, 15th batch Accountancy and Information Department student Maksudul Hasan Arafat, and 16th batch Bangla Department student Farhan Labib Apurbo.

Sheikh Hasina has been named as a primary accused in the case, along with several notable figures including: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid, Additional Joint Commissioner Bipul Kumar, Wari DC Iqbal Hossain, former MP for Dhaka-6 Abu Sayeed Khokon, former MP for Dhaka-7 Solaiman Selim, and Ward Councilors Abdus Rahman Miazi (Ward 37), Ranjan Biswas (Ward 36), and Arif Hossain Choton (Ward 43). Also named are JnU Chhatra League President Ibrahim Forazi, General Secretary SM Akter Hussain, and the Presidents and General Secretaries of the Chhatra Leagues of Kabi Nazrul College and Sohrawardy College.

Confirming the case, plaintiff Samsul Arefin stated, “We have not witnessed such a brutal and tyrannical regime in the 21st century. The nation is suffering from the trauma inflicted by this cruelty. Though the accused has fled, we hope justice will prevail and end all forms of injustice. It is crucial to uphold the culture of justice to establish fairness and humanity in society and the state.”

According to the complaint, on July 19, following Friday prayers, the anti-discrimination protest was held involving students from Jagannath University, Government Kabi Nazrul College, Government Sohrawardy College, and City Corporation Women’s College, along with other members of the public. At approximately 2:50 PM during this protest, Elem Al Faydi, a trainee technician, was shot in front of Kabi Nazrul College. The bullet caused severe head injuries, resulting in his death.
