Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan of the Philosophy Department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) has been appointed as the provisional Vice-Chancellor of the university. The appointment was announced in a notification signed by Md. Shahinur Islam, Deputy Secretary of the Government General University Branch under the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, on Thursday (September 5).

According to the notification, Professor Kamrul Ahsan has been appointed to the position of Vice-Chancellor in accordance with section 11(2) of the Jahangirnagar University Act of 1973, with the approval of the President and Chancellor. The notification specifies that the appointment will be effective from the date of joining, and the appointed Vice-Chancellor will receive a salary and allowances equivalent to his current position. Additionally, he will be required to stay on the university campus full-time as the chief executive officer. The President and Chancellor may cancel the appointment at any time if necessary.

In his immediate response, Professor Kamrul Ahsan expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, saying, “I am grateful to everyone for their confidence in me as Vice-Chancellor. However, I request that you refrain from congratulating me with flowers. We must remember that the martyrs had certain demands for the new Bangladesh they envisioned. It is our responsibility to fulfill their dream of building that new nation. I will keep their contributions in mind while performing my duties. I also urge students and colleagues to point out any mistakes I make and provide constructive criticism.”

Professor Kamrul Ahsan is currently the President of the Jahangirnagar University chapter of the Nationalist Teachers' Forum, a pro-BNP teachers' organization. In addition to his political involvement, he is known as an academic and media personality. He has served as the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Philosophical Society, the Secretary of the Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association, and as an advisor to various social and cultural organizations. He has also held various administrative roles, including being a member of the university's Senate, Syndicate, Academic Council, and as Hall Provost.
