2nd novice debate competition held at BGC Trust University

The final round of the 2nd BGCTUBDC Novice Cup 2024, a debate competition for novice debaters, was held on Sunday at BGC Trust University Bangladesh. The event was organized by the BGC Trust University Bangladesh Debating Club (BGCTUBDC). 

A total of 36 participants from six departments formed 12 teams to compete in the tournament, which began on Saturday. Three preliminary rounds were held on the first day, and the top six speakers based on their scores were divided into two teams for the final round.  

In the final, the team comprising Naim Uddin Tushar (CSE department), Nusrat Jahan Mim (Law department), and Nishu Rani Das (Law department) won the championship, representing the Shaheed Faisal Ahmed Shanto team. The runners-up were the Shaheed Wasim Akram team, which included Mezbah Uddin Bablu (Law department), Khadizatul Selim (Pharmacy department), and Nili Das (Law department).  

The university's vice-chancellor Professor Dr. A.F.M. Aowrangazab addressed the programme as the chief guest while the university's registrar Dr. S.M. Shoaib joined as a special guest. The prize giving ceremony was presided over by Nawrin Afrin, Lecturer of the Business Administration Department and chief adviser of BGCTUBDC while the other club advisers Md. Reduanul Haque, Yasir Silmy, Zinufer Yeasmin, Mahabuba Khanam Shorna, Rezuana Haque, were also present.  

During the ceremony BGCTUBDC's president Anisur Rahman delivered the welcome speech while general secretary Kuslob Kumar Nath conducted the event.

In his speech, Professor Dr. A.F.M. Aowrangazab highlighted the significance of debating in academic and personal development. 

"Debate sharpens intellect by encouraging logical reasoning and critical thinking. It keeps students engaged in studies while broadening their knowledge of academic and global issues, helping them grow into global citizens. Alongside studies, engaging in debate can greatly contribute to individual and societal development,"  the VC said. 

Later, the chief guest presented trophies to the champion and runner-up teams and distributed participation certificates to all debaters.
