A five-day training workshop aimed at enhancing the skills of campus journalists kicked off at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on Thursday (December 5).

The workshop, titled "Agri-Business Marketing, Investigative, and Digital Media Journalism," was inaugurated at 10 a.m. at the Graduate Training Institute (GTI) by BAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan.

A total of 17 journalists representing various national dailies and online news portals, along with two public relations officers from BAU, are participating in the training program.

The event was chaired by GTI Director Professor Dr. Bentul Mawar and moderated by the workshop coordinator, Professor Dr. Md. Mozammel Haque. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan graced the occasion as the chief guest, while the Student Affairs Adviser Professor Dr. Md. Shahidul Haque, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir, and Proctor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Alim attended as special guests.

Other notable attendees included the General Secretary of the BAU Teachers’ Association, Professor Dr. Md. Asaduzzaman Sarkar; Director of the Haor and Char Development Institute, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad; Director of the International Desk, Professor Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam; and Acting Director of the Public Relations and Publications Office, Mohammad Toufiqul Islam.

Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan emphasized the importance of critical judgment in determining the significance of news. "Deciding which issues to prioritize and how to present them requires intelligence. Our reporting should inspire people and raise awareness," he said.

He further added, "Every issue has both positive and negative aspects. Negative aspects should be presented in a way that fosters awareness. It is essential to highlight lapses in university operations or activities to prompt corrective actions. We need news that contributes to skill development and progress."

The workshop aims to equip campus journalists with modern techniques and insights into journalism, fostering a culture of impactful and responsible reporting.
