The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology suspended 11 students of Civil Engineering Department for six months from all academic activities following allegations of ragging.

The suspended students are from the 2022-23 academic session of the Civil Engineering Department.

The decision was disclosed on Thursday through notices signed by Md. Mahbubul Alam, director of the Directorate of Student Welfare and member secretary of the Students’ Discipline Committee.

According to the notices, a group of first-year students from the 2023 batch was allegedly harassed near Imam Ghazzali College outside the university's main gate on November 5 at around 10:30PM. The disciplinary action was taken based on the findings of an investigation committee formed to look into the incident.

The notices further stated that the behavior of the accused students was found to be a violation of the university’s code of conduct, as per the 278th meeting of the Students’ Discipline Committee. Following the investigation and hearings, the charges against the 11 students were proven beyond doubt, leading to their suspension from all academic activities for six months.

However, under Clause 22 of the university’s disciplinary rules, the students have the right to appeal the decision to the Academic Council’s chairman within 15 days.

Md. Saiful Islam, deputy director of the Directorate of Student Welfare, said, “The suspension decision was based on the investigation report and personal hearings of the accused students. The administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy against ragging and drug abuse. Anyone found involved will face strict consequences.”

"CUET authorities are committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all students, with strong measures in place to prevent incidents of harassment or misconduct,"he added.
