BRAC University observed the fifth death anniversary of its founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, with a series of heartfelt events on its Merul Badda campus today (Thursday, 19 December 2024).
The commemorative programs included a discussion, a session reminiscing about his life, philosophy and works, an art exhibition, poster presentations, and recognition of social impact projects initiated by students.
Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, a pioneer of socio-economic development in Bangladesh, passed away on 20 December 2019, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions globally.
The monthlong art exhibition was inaugurated by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Mahfuzul Aziz and Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Founder and Advisor of BRAC Institute of Languages.
It featured artworks from Sir Abed’s personal collection, paintings by students and research posters paying homage to his social initiatives. Three of the student artworks were presented prizes whereas two others received honorable mentions.
Professor Fuad Hasan Mallik, Dean of the School of Architecture and Design; Professor Zainab Faruqui Ali, Chairperson of the Department of Architecture; Registrar Dave Dowland; and Khairul Basher, Director of the Office of Communications, were present.
“Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s legacy lives on, be it through the students of BRAC University or projects of BRAC that continue to run at the farthest corners of Bangladesh,” said Professor Aziz.
Dr. Erum Mariam, Executive Director of the BRAC Institute of Educational Development, gave a presentation titled “Abed Bhai Ke Ghire Kothokota”, recalling how Sir Abed emphasized giving courage to children and encouraging them to dream.
In the afternoon, students sang, recited poetry and danced to some of Sir Abed’s favorite songs at an event titled “Tumi Robe Nirobe”.
Registrar Dowland recited two poems, and Communications Director Khairul Basher moderated a panel discussion with current and former students on how Sir Abed inspired them into engaging in research and socio-economic development.
A total of 18 social impact projects initiated by students were also recognized.
Besides, BRAC University Chess Club also organized a chess competition on 18 December 2024 marking the anniversary.
